RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH
BIRD LIBRARY »Nesting Habits of the Red-Breasted Nuthatch
Nest building appears to be an aggressive time for the Red-Breasted Nuthatch as it chases off other birds searching for nesting places.
Both the male and the female Red-Breasted Nuthatch construct the nest from grass and pine needles and create a soft inner area from feathers, fur, and gentle grass. The female Red-Breasted Nuthatch lays 5-6 white eggs that are speckled in red and brown.
As the female Red-Breasted Nuthatch sits on the eggs, the male will bring her food so she can keep incubating the eggs until they hatch which is usually within 12 or 13 days.
During the first few days after the Red-Breasted Nuthatch chicks hatch, the male will bring food to both the female and the babies.
The Red-Breasted Nuthatch hatchlings will fledge and leave the nest within the next two to three weeks. After another two weeks near their parents, they will venture fully into the world.
