Bird Feeding - A History
Although the actual date has been disputed, feeding birds for pleasure is thought to have started around the end of the 19th century. It's recorded in British national newspapers in 1890 that the country asked its citizens to put out food for the birds because of the harsh winters they were experiencing. People soon enjoyed being able to see the birds on their doorsteps and the hobby began to catch on. In 1910, the U.K.'s Punch magazine declared that feeding wild birds was a national pastime.
In more recent times, bird feeding has grown into America's second largest hobby with over 50 million individuals participating. In fact, the hobby has become so popular that in 1994 Congressman John Porter declared the month of February to be National Bird Feeding Month. During this month, individuals are encouraged to provide food, water and shelter for wild birds whose access to seeds and insects may be limited due to the freezing temperatures.
Benefits of Bird Feeding
Not only does bird feeding help the wild birds, it also has many benefits to individuals and families as well.
Birding is a great family activity. Feeding wild birds can bring a fun and exciting educational experience to children and adults alike.
Birding is an eco-friendly hobby. The hobby is centered around primarily observation and has a low impact on the local environment. By setting up feeders or planting bird friendly plants in your yard, you're creating a habitat for birds to enjoy.
Birding has many health benefits. Your backyard is not the only place where birding can be done. There are many hikes, trails and walks that can lead you to discover new species of birds. Even backyard birders get good exercise from hauling bags of seed to and from feeders, cleaning feeders & planting and maintaining their landscape for birds to enjoy.
Birding is fun and rewarding. Many birders feel a sense of accomplishment and pride to nurture these magnificent little creatures that can brighten any day. Hearing their songs and watching them flurry to your feeders can be an exciting experience that you're sharing with millions of other people throughout the world.
Getting Started with PERKY-PET®
Perky-Pet® began in Denver, Colorado as a distributor of pet supplies. The original owner distributed pet supplies to retailers in Denver and many mountain towns in Colorado.
While delivering supplies to the retailers in the mountains of Colorado, he was asked about a feeder to feed the fast moving hummingbirds. Bill was inspired by an IV bottle his wife had brought home one day and consequently developed what was the first hummingbird feeder. The tube-type hummingbird feeder, available in a 2oz and 4oz size became a huge success. By 1962, Perky-Pet® was selling these two feeders, bee guards, nectar, and two combinations of feeders and bee guards nationally. This feeder remained in the Perky-Pet® line up until early 2003.
In 1995, Perky-Pet® began the process of designing, manufacturing, and distributing Wild Bird Seed Feeders. This made Perky-Pet® the first one-source manufacturer of Bird Feeders. To this day, Perky-Pet® continues to be a leader in the Wild Bird Feeding Industry.
Each year, sometimes as early as January, hummingbirds (specifically the Ruby-throated species) embark on a journey that requires a great deal of their time and energy. They begin their return voyage sometimes as early as mid-July. This hummingbird migration journey is part of the hummingbird life cycle and is necessary for their survival.
