Review RateSquirrels are having a feast
Not at all squirrel proof. My feeder is pole mounted with a squirrel baffle under it. The squirrels will jump the four feet up to the perch. They started getting to the seed by hanging from the roof after less than a day to get at the seed. Seeing the seed behind the window, they then gnawed the plastic tab from under one of the windows so that they can sit on the perch and empty the feeder of most of the seed. That happened after a couple of days. Would be a great feeder if you don't have squirrels.Response From Perky-Pet®Kathryn : Consumer Relations Representative
We're sorry to hear the furry thieves are still stealing your birdseed! When placing feeders, we recommend locations at least 4 ft off the ground and 8 ft away from launching points to deter the local squirrels. Review RateGet the feeder with a baffle and have no problem with squirrels.
I have had this feeder four years, and I rate the feeder excellent. It is easy to fill and easy to clean. As far as squirrels are concerned, I ordered the feeder with the universal pole (#5107-4) and the pole baffle (#341), and I totally enjoy watching squirrels tackle the system, because they get totally baffled. Squirrels entertain a person without let-up. Squirrels try every possible way to get to the feeder, inevitably turn around, light on the ground and gaze up in a woebegone manner--and slink away, defeated. After four years, the plastic is becoming cloudy, and the paint on the four bottom corners is wearing off. Thus, I have ordered the same feeder again.
Review RatePretty but seed life issues
This beautiful feeder is a joy in most aspects, but I am beginning to believe the perfect feeder does not exist. This one holds a lot of seed but I wouldn't recommend fully filling it due to issues with moisture in the hot summer rains...no matter how I try to protect it, I am having a terrible time with seed getting caught in the feeder slots & even sprouting. Have only had the feeder 3 wks & yes, I do clean it often. Is there a dome cover large enough to help shield it from rain? As for deterring squirrels it does a pretty good job of making them slide off the roof. Regardless, mine has some deep gouges which I can hardly be from squirrels. Raccoon maybe...
Review RateNot squirrel proof at all
DO NOT BUY THIS BIRD FEEDER! I GOT IT FOR CHRISTMAS FROM MY HUSBAND! IT DOES NOT WORK! I watch the squirrels get in the dang feeder EVERY DANG DAY. WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY! I'm really sad. I was skeptical that it would work and I followed the instructions. No matter where I move the tensioner, the squirrels just push the bar down and let up on the bar and feast away. I have pictures to send to your company. I'm going to try the motorized one I think that one will work. But not this one. I can't keep seed in it for the birds because all the squirrels know how to get in it. It was a waste of money to me.Response From Perky-Pet®Kathryn : Consumer Relations Representative

Review RateNo squirrels, excellent customer service
Feeder looks great, keeping squirrels out. Waiting for a few more birds to locate the feeder, but there are a few regulars. Original feeder was received as a gift, and was not in working condition. Very satisfied with customer service, that made everything right.
Review Rategood idea but doesn't work
Have had my 2 feeders up for a little over a week. It rained and I had to empty the feeders and dig out the wet seed. The sun came out and the squirrels arrived. The birds all left. I would rather have the squirrels and the birds than no birds at all.Response From Perky-Pet®Jennifer : Consumer Relations Representative
Birds are creatures of habit and may need time to adjust to a new feeder. We recommend placing a water source nearby to attract them. To deter squirrels, we recommend adding a small amount of cayenne pepper to the seed as they do not like spicy food. Also, keeping the feeder at least 12 feet away from any launching point and four feet off the ground will help force the squirrels to come in contact with the weight activated perch.

Review RateDidn't last 1 year!
Squirrels chewed the lip of plastic that holds the window to the front of the feeder, then made their own front door to all the seeds they could eat! Too much money to last only one season!Response From Perky-Pet®Jennifer : Consumer Relations Representative
To force the squirrels to interact with the weight-activated system, we recommend placing the feeder at least 12 feet away from any type of launch pad (tree, fence..etc) and at least four feet off the ground.
Squirrels also dislike cayenne pepper and safflower seed. The pepper does not bother the birds at all and the safflower seed is nutritious for birds! We recommend adding a little of each to the seed to deter squirrels.

Review RateSturdy and Does The Job!
Perky-Pet Squirrel Be Gone is doing the job. First day I put it out, my squirrel tried and tried but no luck. He even sat on the roof, trying to figure it out. I do have a another feeder near my fence which he feeds on. He no longer attempts the Perky Pet feeder. 3 birds at a time can feed on the perch. I had no trouble putting it together or removing the roof. If only these customers would read the instructions more carefully, they could easily do it. Feeder made to last!
Review RateProblem with roof
I bought the perky pet squirrel be gone green feeder with copper roof and for the life of me cannot get the chimney to line up to keep the roof on. I just spent 45 minutes working on this and I'm ready to explode! This should not be this difficult and a friend has one and says hers works. I wonder if there is some sort of alignment problem??Response From Perky-Pet®Patty : Consumer Relations Representative
We are sorry to hear about this experience and are happy to help.
With the roof off, look at the direction of the locking mechanism under the chimney. Make sure it is pointing at the same angle as the slot it will slide through. Place the roof down onto the feeder (the back of the roof is flush with the back of the feeder). While pushing the roof down firmly, turn the chimney a quarter turn and the lock should be in place.

Review RateGreat product;s and better customer service
Great product and even better customer service. I just got off the phone with a lovely customer service rep explaining the top of my feed has a weather vane that holds the roof of the feeder on. I told her it broke and she told me they don't have replacement parts. She asked me to hold for a minute. When she came back to the phone she said that they are going to replace the whole feeder. I was shocked, but it just goes to see that there are company's and their people that work for them that REALLY care about their customers.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: What are the most popular bird seeds to use?
A: Black Oil Sunflower Seed is the most popular bird seed. It is much smaller than the traditional sunflower seed and best for those birds with smaller bills, such as the sparrow, junco and goldfinch. This seed is accepted by the greatest variety of birds.
Mixed Seed is also popular. It is best to buy the mixes that contain white proso millet, a tiny cream colored seed with a shiny shell. Mixes containing finely cracked corn and black oil sunflower are also preferred by a large number of birds.
Thistle Seed is imported from Africa and Asia. Thistle won't germinate, however, it has a tendency to become moldy due to lack of air circulation. If you notice mold on the seed, it must be removed from the feeder and the feeder must be cleaned thoroughly.
Q: How do I clean my bird feeders?
A: Seed feeders can be dish washed or hand washed. Before filling your feeders with fresh seed, it is recommended that the following precautions are taken:
- Remove all old seed.
- Place the feeder on top rack of the dish washer.
- Allow the feeder to dry completely before refilling.
- Remove all old seed.
- Soak feeder in water.
- Gently cleanse feeder and allow to air dry.
After the feeder is clean and dry follow these steps
- Rake and remove accumulated hulls and droppings from underneath the feeders.
- Spread mulch (bark or wood) under the feeder, replace mulch when soiled.
- Thoroughly wash hands after handling and cleaning feeders.
Q: What is the importance of providing water for wild birds?
A: Wild birds need fresh, clean water just as much as they need seed. Birds stay healthy by using water not just for drinking, but also for bathing, cleaning their feathers and to remove parasites. Waterers are better options than bird baths because they provide birds with fresh, clean water that prevents dirt and debris from contaminating it. In hotter climates or seasons, providing water for birds makes it easy for them to have access to a water source and retain their energy. By adding a water source, you also can attract a larger variety of birds to your yard. You may even attract more colorful birds that don't eat seed, but are in need of water!
