We had a little finch ...

We had a little finch reach too far down into the bin to eat and fell in. We were on vacation, got back and noticed this poor little guy died trying to escape the impossible. :( Company does not supply any way to make the feeding holes smaller, so we will try to fashion a peg or some way that cuts down the size of the feeding hole to prevent this in the future.

We’re so sorry to hear about your finch, that’s a heartbreaking thing to come home to. You’re right that this model’s open reservoir doesn’t include a built-in way to restrict the feeding port size. In the meantime, keeping seed levels topped up rather than letting them run low can help, since birds are less likely to climb deep into the reservoir when seed is close to the port openings, and checking the feeder every few days rather than over a longer trip away can catch this kind of situation early. If you’re open to it, Perky-Pet’s Squirrel-Be-Gone Max line uses a different port design (called Flexports) specifically built to limit how far a bird can reach in while still letting them feed comfortably, which may be worth looking into for extra peace of mind. We’ll also pass your feedback about a port-size option along to our team.
This feeder does not last more than a few months due to birds enlarging the feeding ports. This results in the feeder not holding the seed.

I have had this feeder for only a few months. The birds have enlarged the feeding ports so it no longer holds the seed. There are no replacement parts for this. As a result, the whole feeder is now useless. I can not recommend this product to anyone due to the cost and short useful life of the feeder.

We’re sorry to hear the feeding ports came loose or were pried out so soon after purchase. While the cage itself is metal, the feeding ports are plastic, and persistent squirrels are typically what cause them to loosen or break since they’ll pull or chew at the ports to reach the seed. For better results, hang the feeder with at least 10 to 12 feet of clearance from trees, fences, or other structures a squirrel could jump from, and consider adding a properly sized squirrel baffle if it’s pole-mounted, since this cuts off the access that leads to port damage. It’s also worth checking periodically that each port is fully seated and that the springs and clips holding the weight-activated mechanism are intact, since a loose port is much easier to dislodge.

good bird and squirrel feeder. IF you think something like this will work i have some other devices to sell you. our squirrels show up with tool belts and hard hats along with some raccoons who are the foremen. Nothing will keep a squirrel out other than a BB gun.

Thanks for the feedback, and we appreciate the humor along with it. The weight-activated ports are calibrated to close under a squirrel's weight, but persistent squirrels and raccoons can sometimes find a workaround if the setup isn't quite right. Placement makes a big difference: hang the feeder with at least 18 inches of clearance on all sides and away from anything a squirrel could jump from, since a nearby branch, fence, or wall lets them bypass the weight mechanism entirely. It's also worth checking periodically that the cage moves freely and the ports are closing fully, since seed residue or debris can occasionally keep them from sealing all the way. If squirrels are still getting past it with that clearance in place, a squirrel baffle below the feeder adds an extra layer of defense they can't climb around.

Squirrels will simple pry off the feeding port and the entire contents of the feeder pours out on the ground. Poor design. Trash as a regular feeder and certainly NOT Squirrel proof!

My bird feeder is still kicking. But the base is brittle and the tap broke, do you sell replacements? Please advise. For the squirrel people a air gun works well over 30 taken out and counting. They are getting the hint

Although they work as designed, the squirrels will break the plastic to get to the seeds. They even bent the decorative leaves to get into them. I had mine hung from a long rod away from everything with a squirrel baffle and they still got into them.

We’re sorry to hear the squirrels were able to damage your feeder. Squirrels can be very persistent, especially when bird seed is easily accessible. For best results, make sure the feeder is positioned at least 10 feet away from trees, structures, and other surfaces that squirrels could use to reach or jump onto it. Using a properly sized squirrel baffle can provide an additional barrier. We appreciate your feedback about the plastic and decorative leaves and will share it with our product team.
While the feeder is squirrel ...

While the feeder is squirrel proof, it isn't very durable. Soon after I hung it up, one of the perches was bent by a critter who couldn't get any food and left it hanging crooked. It easily unhooks now and the metal is bent. Also, due to critters other than birds, the metal ring that goes around the top is now not fastened at all to anything and is permanently unattached. The main complaint about this feeder is that there is no easy way to clean it. When rain gets in and mushes up the seed, you have to try to dump it out from the top. Even using tools, I couldn't get all the bad seed out. It does no good to have an unclean feeder. Very disappointed with this feeder. Don't know how anyone's review can say this feeder is easy to clean.

We’re sorry to hear about the issues you experienced with the Perky-Pet® Squirrel-Be-Gone® Wild Bird Feeder. For cleaning, we recommend removing the remaining seed and debris, then washing the feeder with warm, soapy water and thoroughly rinsing and drying it before refilling. Regular cleaning can help prevent seed buildup, especially after wet weather. To help keep seed dry, placing the feeder in a sheltered location protected from rain can also help. We appreciate your detailed feedback regarding the bent perch, detached metal ring, and cleaning access, and we’ll share these comments with our product team.
Lasted one week.

I had a feeder that was exactly like this one. I bought it about 20 years ago and decided to replace it this years after the plastic cracked. This feeder lasted less than a week. I filled it once and a week later I went out to fill it and the spring one one side was gone. The plastic clip that holds the spring was broken. It is unlikely the plastic clip will last on any of these. I didn't expect to get 20 years of use out of this one, but more than a week was expected.

We’re sorry to hear about the issue with your Perky-Pet® Squirrel-Be-Gone® Wild Bird Feeder. We understand how disappointing it is to have a feeder perform well for many years and then have an issue with a replacement so soon. The tension springs and clips are important to the feeder’s squirrel-resistant mechanism, and the feeder should be checked periodically to make sure these components remain properly seated and intact. If the spring or plastic clip becomes damaged, the feeder should be discontinued until the component can be replaced. We appreciate you sharing your experience and feedback with us.

These are our favorite birdfeeders and we have used them for over 25 years. We get a lot of yellow finches and they’re absolutely adorable. The squirrels in our area gave up on our feeders a long time ago and that’s important because we buy the no waste bird food and it’s so expensive.

Bought this after squirrels chewed out the FlexPorts on my Squirrel-Be-Gone® Max. This feeder is okay but squirrels seem to be able to get into it more easily. Eventually there were enough of them hanging off the cage to snap the wire it hangs from. Dumbfounded why Perky-Pet doesn't sell replacement ports.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re sorry to hear about the damage to your feeder and the frustration this has caused. Squirrels can be very persistent and may damage feeders when they are able to repeatedly access them. To help reduce squirrel damage, we recommend placing the feeder at least 10–12 feet away from trees, fences, or other structures squirrels can use to jump from, and using a properly sized baffle if the feeder is mounted on a pole. Keeping the feeding area clean of spilled seed can also help reduce squirrel activity. We’d also like to remind you that this feeder is covered by a 1-year warranty. If your feeder has been damaged or you are experiencing an issue that may be related to a product defect, please contact our customer service team with your purchase information, and we’ll be happy to assist you.
