Plastic Feed Ports get destroyed by squirrels
Mar 23, 2025
I have observed this on the 337 and the 336. Even when their weight blocks the ports the squirrels have actually bent the sheet metal leaves up so they can access the feed.
On the 337, the feed ports being loosely secured from the outside instead of permanently molded in like they are on the 336, for example [https://www.perkypet.com/perky-pet-squirrel-be-gone-wild-bird-feeder-336], exposes the ports to attack and eventual destruction from the squirrels.
Once loosened, the ports can be rotated and become oriented such that the feed above them just spills out. Simply rotating them back to the correct orientation momentarily solves the problem but not for long as the squirrels learn to exploit the rotation. Once a given port is destroyed and falls inside you can't fill the feeder up past it.
I've had to move the few remaining usable ports to one tube so I can use the feeder at all. So instead of it being a huge capacity feeder it becomes very limited.
A call to Support was very disappointing. They not only don't have replacement ports available but they basically said I should try my luck on the internet. Though there are products that pretend to be suitable they don't actually identify any of them as fitting brand X model Y feeders.
I would think Perky Pet would take more ownership of the problems and work out solutions for all of us.
As it is, instead of being a literal Squirrel-B-Gone it's a bird-friendly squirrel feeder.
I was very unhappy with lack of support for an otherwise good product.

I was very happy with the feeder until one of the springs failed which prevented the birds from getting the food that they could see but not access because all the ports were closed. It should have been an easy fix of replacing the spring but when I called Perky Pet I was told that there were NO REPLACEMENT PARTS-NO SPRINGS. No springs to replace an essential function, meaning it is a throw away product. I searched a number of hardware stores looking for a workable spring but could not find one. If you don't stock the springs then you should identify a source for the appropriate substitute.

My original one of these feeders is great and works as described. I have had it for years. I sought out a second one last year and the squirrels eat the plastic piece around the hole and then continued to eat a much larger hole in the side of the feeder. The wire part didn't drop down to prevent this or got stuck. The wire part is just not functioning correctly. Feeder destroyed, money wasted. Obviously there are construction/material issues with the new vs. the old.

I am not happy for the price we paid. When filling with seed it pours out the large ports. As the birds feed, half the seed ends up on the ground. So, guess what? The squirrels get fed by just waiting for all the seed to fall out the overly large ports. I'd like to get a different feed but, we put out way to much on this one to turn around and buy another. I can't help but, wonder if the ports were put in wrong??? It just seems to empty to the ground within a very short time and 90% of the feeding of birds & squirrels happens on the ground.

Chewed ports ruined great feeder.
May 29, 2023
Chewed ports ruined great feeder. Love the feeder, love lots of feeding ports, works as stated when squirrels actually jump on it. HOWEVER, while filling yesterday, one of the columns just started pouring out all the seed. That's when I noticed the entire plastic port was missing on the top hole for that section. I filled up the other two sections, and only filled the one with the missing port to below the top hole missing the port. A few hours later, one of the two full sections was way down, but other wasn't. I went out, port was now missing on a second section. Eventually found the ports below, and noticed the bottom part of the circle was completely broken. I checked the third top port, and it's damaged, hasn't fallen out yet. I couldn't figure out why only the top ports were damaged. Then I read all the other reviews about squirrels hanging from top and destroying the ports. That explained why only the top port, didn't occur to me but makes perfect sense. We've done great for years w/o squirrels even trying to get on the feeder, but for some reason was have some new ones in past couple of week who are ignoring or usual deterrents. I've seen one hanging from top, so that's likely the culprit. I've read the suggestions for where to put up the feeder so squirrels can't jump on it, not sure I really have any place in my yard that will work. I'll have to go back and amp up the other deterrents.

First, big grey squirrel hangs upside down from rim and top perches and chews threw plastic at base of feeder freeing seeds. Secondly, this activity takes multi attempts which unscrewed the feeder from the lid and feeder support and entire feeder falls to the ground. Squirrels 1, dft 0. this only took squirrels 1 month to figure out.

We're sorry to hear your feeder was damaged by these furry thieves! To help deter squirrels, we recommend placing feeders at least 4 ft off the ground and 8 ft away from launching points like trees and fences. For additional recommendations, or assistance with our 1-year replacement policy, please contact us at 855-737-5973, we're happy to help.
Junk.
Sep 25, 2022
Junk after just a few months of ownership. They used plastic inserts where the birds eat. These inserts provide space for birds to eat and prevents food from coming out. Squirrels can easily chew on them although they can't get to the food. But when the inserts get damaged they prevent the cage from moving. In addition, when the inserts are damaged they spin around and the food just pours out. Waste of food, waste of my money in lost seed with the purchase of this feeder. Paid $55, don't waste yours. Replacing inserts would just be a temporary fix, they should be made out of metal, not plastic. Obviously the manufacturer didn't test it with squirrels for a long term evaluation.

I really like these feeders.

I really like these feeders. However the squirrels chewed the plastic ports out. Do you sell replacement ports? These feeders are expensive and I shouldn't have to buy a new one. Thank you
