I don’t know who or when changed the design , but they need to be terminated. I have purchased this feeder since the early 2000”s. The reservoir use to break apart between the feed ports and perch sections. Now I see all these comments that you can’t separate it for proper cleaning. I thought it was just me loosing grip strength. I called to verify that it still separated. To my surprise I learn from your customer service department , it doesn’t separate now. The sections had to be molded separately, so what the heck were they thinking??? I can separate the $2 feeder from Dollar General but can’t properly clean the $23 one from the bird people. If you are going to New And Improve something, why make it more difficult ? Someone in R&D needs to go. Im sure you are aware of this design flaw by now because that is all I’ve seen in the comments.

We appreciate you sharing this feedback, and we understand the frustration around cleaning. The base on this feeder is designed to unscrew and separate, giving access to the reservoir for cleaning, but it separates horizontally below the bottle, between the perch and flower port sections, rather than pulling apart the way older versions did. We know this isn't as intuitive as it should be, and your input is valuable in highlighting where clearer instructions are needed. In the meantime, using the Perky-Pet® Cleaning Mop (sold separately) can help reach the base and ports thoroughly between disassembly, and cleaning twice a week, more often in warm weather, will help keep buildup manageable.

Very disappointed. I was so excited about my new feeder - love the size and the retractable perch feature. But I can’t get it apart to thoroughly clean the base. Without being to clean it properly bacteria will build up and create mold which will kill hummingbirds. I did read below that it can be unscrewed and taken apart but that is extremely time consuming and ridiculous since I have to change their feeder every day in the hot temps.

We're sorry to hear the feeder has not met your expectations. The base is designed to be disassembled for a more thorough cleaning when needed by carefully unscrewing the flower ports and separating the components. For routine nectar changes, many customers find that rinsing the bottle and base with warm water and cleaning the feeding ports with a small brush is sufficient between deep cleanings. In hot weather, replacing nectar frequently is important, and we appreciate your feedback regarding the cleaning process as we continue to evaluate product designs.

Terrible! Cannot be cleaned properly! I threw it away. I will not risk a dirty feeder for my hummingbirds! Every other feeder I have, the base comes apart for easy cleaning.

For clarification, this feeder’s base unscrews into parts, allowing access to the reservoir for cleaning. It separates horizontally below the bottle—between the perches and the flower ports—which should allow for a more thorough clean than it may first appear.

Seemed Great at first.. liked the size and the perches.. BUT.. it doesn’t come apart for cleaning!
I figured out a way to bend a straw cleaner.. but it’s hard to tell if it’s clean, when I can’t see inside!

Love the feeder and so the hummers but, leaked after 1st season. My old ones like this 7-10 years ago worked just fine. What happened?

Oh my gosh! I haven't worked this hard to clean any hummingbird feeder before. I tried to unscrew the base to clean it well even using a small screw driver. No luck. I ended up using dish soap and filled it up and rinsed it for quite some time till the water ran clean. I had already worked for 15 minutes to get the flower ports screwed back in. I thought they would just pop in like my last feeder. Then I worried that they might come loose when the birds are feeding. So I screwed them in as much as I could. I was exhausted when it was all done. My last Perky Pet feeder was so easy to clean. I agree with others that the opening on the bottle is impossible to clean without buying new brushes. I also have been trying to find replacement ports for when these get moldy. No luck at all. Going to call customer service to explain all these problems with it.

Removing the screws from the bottom will only gain access to the perch mechanism and not the inside of the base. We do not recommend removing the screws. Replacement parts are not available for this feeder. It has a one year replacement policy. Reach out to us via the Contact Us page for assistance.

As stated by other customers, very very disappointed that the base of this hummer feeder does not come apart to clean. I really thing this is a QC, design flaw, BIG MISTAKE. Who tested this feeder? Anyone who feeds hummers knows that the base MUST come apart in order to clean the black mold that inevitably grows on hummer feeders. Can't get away from it. Never did I think to "test drive" the base to see if it comes apart on a feeder from Perky Pet. Assumed, unfortunately, that Perky Pet would automatically know to have the base be able to come apart for cleaning purposes. I would not recommend this feeder. I think it should be pulled from the market. Poor, poor design.

Thank you for sharing your feedback, it has been shared with the Product Manager. For hard to reach areas, such as the base of this feeder, try using handful of uncooked rice. Fill the feeder with a solution of one-part vinegar to four-parts water, add the rice and shake vigorously. Dump the rice and rinse thoroughly and it's ready for new nectar.

The base of this feeder is not able to be separated for cleaning. Removing the screws on the bottom will only gain access to the perch mechanism. We do not recommend removing the screws in this feeder.

I have over the years bought 4 of the 20oz hummingbird feeders they work great but age does creep up I need replacement flower incerts as the plastic has got brittel.

Glad you're loving the feeder! This model doesn't have a built-in ant moat, which is likely why ants are finding their way in. A few ways to keep them out:
- Add a standalone ant moat: Perky-Pet sells separate ant moats that attach to the hanger above the feeder, fill the small reservoir with water, and ants can't cross it to reach the nectar.
- Check for leaks: Ants are drawn to drips and spills, so make sure the feeder is sealed tightly and not overfilled, since leaking nectar is often what attracts them in the first place.
- Reposition the feeder: Moving it away from areas where ants have an easy path (tree branches, walls, etc.) can help reduce access.
- Avoid oil or petroleum-based ant deterrents directly on the feeder, since these can be harmful to hummingbirds, a separate moat is the safer option.

I took the bottom apart to see if the insides needed cleaning but now the two parts don't stay together.

If the two pieces are no longer staying together after disassembly, it's possible they were not fully threaded back together or may be slightly misaligned. Try aligning the threads carefully and twisting the pieces together until they are snug. Avoid overtightening, as this can damage the threads.
