Model 735 is Pigeon-Proof
Apr 15, 2023
In Las Vegas, our squirrels are tiny and it’s the PIGEONS who steal the food from our finches. The model 735 Preserve is great, but I had to open up the cage so that the finches could get inside. I used wire cutters to cut out an “X” on both sides (see photo). Now the finches can feed, and the pigeons are on the ground catching anything that drops (see photo).
With the modification to cut out an “X” on each side, my Model 735 is now Pigeon-Proof! Thank you!
Works fine for most small birds. Discourages larger birds like doves.

At first, my birds could not figure out how to use the feeder, but eventually, a chipping sparrow showed them what to do. Now the small birds love it. The goldfinches, however, are still not sure and don't use it.
not just squirrel proof.

I love this feeder. I was getting tired of feeding the rats. They can't get in it.
I've had it up for ...

I've had it up for a few weeks now with using the same wild bird seeds as my feeder before. Small and large birds all around it but none seem to be able to figure out how to land and get to the seeds with the cage in place. The feeder is still full after 3 weeks! Not sure if I can empty it and return it now that it is used.
Squirrels, large nuisance birds love it!

Great looking feeder, bigger than expected. Well constructed, and relatively easy to clean. Giving it only 2 stars as the design failed to keep squirrels, starlings, grackles, and jays out. Adding a squirrel baffle to the pole solved the squirrel problem, but as I write this, the feeder is draped in large birds. No small backyard songbirds will come even close as a result.
Not working

No birds have come! Not sure if I didn’t get the right birdseed or what the problem is. So sad.
Good feeder

Good bird feeder and it does prevent any red squirrels to get inside to eat the seeds! Thanks
Good feeder, but so close to being great - just needs a few tweaks

If the wire cage had a slightly bigger diameter, like maybe an inch to an inch-and-a-half larger, it'd be able to more effectively stop larger blackbirds like starlings. They're definitely not decimating it like on my previous feeders, but they can hang on and just barely reach the port to grab a large seed or two. A tiny bit bigger diameter for the wire cage and those birds won't be a problem ever again! I would also like to see a way to easily detach the bottom plate for cleaning, as some others have mentioned. Aside from that, so far so good with this feeder for me. Any plastic tube feeder will deal with moisture buildup, but there are products available on the market to deal with and prevent that safely.
Good overall design but needs tweaking

The overall design is good but there are some flaws: 1. The seed catching tray sounds good but in reality it is a health hazard to the birds. Rain or high humidity makes seeds wet, clump/stick to the base and are difficult to remove; are unhealthy for birds. This mess is difficult to clean, more so in cold weather. ?Can I remove the base and turn it upside down so the seeds are shed to the ground? There are few ports to feed and some birds prefer ground feeding; this would feed more birds at one time. More ports would be a plus. 2. The plastic cylinder warps at the top opening in cold weather during the refilling; this makes it difficult/impossible to replace the cap in cold weather. The cylinder would be improved by being a stronger plastic. The cap seal ring would be easier to replace if it fit over(not into) the cylinder with just a little "play" area to accommodate weather conditions.
Button spring is weak

This feeder's only weakness is the spring button to raise and lower the lid. It works well until the spring becomes weak and then the feeder is totally ineffective at keeping squirrels out as they are able to push the lid up and crawl inside. I have photographic evidence. :/
