It's Hummingbird Happy Hour at the Hummerbar®

Ever wonder what hummingbirds are really thinking when they are at the feeder? Perky-Pet® has determined what’s going on when hummingbirds visit the ever-popular Hummerbar®. As it turns out, the Hummerbar® is a social gathering that hummingbirds can’t seem to resist! With dozens of feeder ports, this ol’ waterin’ hole can serve a hungry flock of hummingbirds at one time!

In fact, we recently pointed our camera on the Hummerbar® and captured an interesting conversation among the hummingbirds! Check out the video for the details!

The Hummerbar® is surely a place where everybody knows your name and all hummingbirds get along! Want to know more about hummingbirds? Belly up to the bar for some interesting facts about hummingbirds!

It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere

Did you know there are peak times for hummingbird feeding? These little dynamos prefer to feed in the early morning – just after they wake up – and in the evening – just before settling in for the night. They need the energy boost before they hit the sheets and then again after the sunrise. With their high metabolism, it can be tough to make it through the night!

Energy Drink

So just what is hummingbird nectar? It’s basically an energy drink for these little beauties! By mimicking natural flower nectar, humans have learned the perfect formula for hummingbirds. Just mix 4 parts water with 1 part sugar and boil. Once it’s cooled, you can add it to your Hummerbar® hummingbird feeder and the flying balls of energy will be enjoying it in no time.

Beyond the Bar

If hummingbirds tend to only eat at feeders in the mornings and evenings, you’re probably wondering what they’re doing the rest of the time. They’re usually busy hunting! Yep, hummingbirds eat lots of bugs during the day. They can’t spend all their time hanging at the feeder!

Leaving the Kids at Home

If you’ve ever seen a hummingbird, you know just how small they are. Their nests and eggs are even tinier! Their eggs are usually about the size of a pea or small jellybean. A typical hummingbird nest is only the size of a thimble. It’s made from spider webs and other materials that stretch as the hummingbird chicks grow.

Get off my Turf

Some hummingbirds are naturally territorial. We’ve seen a single hummingbird guard a vertical, 4 or 6 port feeder with ease. The Hummerbar® is expertly designed with numerous ports positioned appropriately to prevent a hummingbird from taking over the entire feeder for him or herself. Bully hummingbirds don’t stand a chance at the Hummerbar®.

Take a Vacation

While you may enjoy a stay-cation at home watching your hummingbird feeders, remember hummingbirds are international travelers! Some hummingbirds will travel from Mexico to Alaska as part of their yearly migration cycle. Others will dip into Central and South America during the winter and return to the U.S. or Canada during the summer. As they make those amazing treks, they’re helped along the way by people like you! When you put out a Hummerbar® or other hummingbird feeder, you’re providing them with a great rest stop to sustain their energy levels for their journeys.
