Pretty feeder but the base rusted By Wendy

I was given this feeder as a going away gift when we moved. I was excited about the fact that it was glass and metal. I thought it would be much more sturdy then the plastic ones I bought in the past. Well, the metal base rusted. I came to the site looking for a replacement because I really want to get the feeder up again since we are warming up in AZ. I don't see that there is a replacement base for this feeder. I am disappointed because this is such a nice feeder otherwise and my neighborhood birds come around looking for it and I don't have anything for them.

Hello Wendy,

Perky-Pet® strives to create high-quality feeders for our customers and the birds to enjoy. We regret to hear that what was received did not meet these expectations.

The finishing process on the base of this unit should prevent leaking and prolong the life of the feeder.  Our feeders are covered by a one year replacement warranty. Please contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-PERKYPET (1-855-737-5973) for additional assistance.

Poor Feeder By Tony57

We have one of these that we bought thinking it would be superior to the plastic ones, which always seem to leak stick syrup all over the deck. There is NO RED anywhere on the feeder and the powdered sugar crystals only make the syrup PINK. Th flowers one the unit are YELLOW. In short, the little birds won't come near ours and the syrup spoils within a week. I *may* try to paint the base and flowers red this winter and see if that works better. If not, it goes to Goodwill. The one thing I DO LIKE is that it's easy to fill and doesn't leak. Other than that, it looks nice, but won't attract hummingbirds in my area.

Lauren : Consumer Relations Representative

Hello Tony,

Hummingbirds do like the color red, but feed at nectar-producing flowers of many colors, including blue, white, and yellow.  The intensity of the red color in the nectar may vary, but this will not affect the taste or attraction.

We appreciate the time taken to provide this feedback and apologize for the experience.  Hummingbird nectar can spoil or ferment, and should be changed on a regular basis. During hot weather, change it every two days. In milder weather, once a week is fine.

Our Consumer Relations Team will be glad to provide additional assistance.  We can be reached at 1-855-PERKYPET (1-855-737-5973).

The hummingbirds love this feeder By Marianne
Because of the ring, they sit down to eat, but they still switch to the other flowers on the ring

Big disappointment By Weezie
very disappointed with this feeder! I bought two of them because I thought they were so attractive, but ants get into them the first day I put out clean nectar. The hummingbirds stay away because of how quickly this ruins the nectar. Save your money and buy the tried-and-true types of hummingbird feeders

Great, but... By Lindley71
We have 3 of these feeders and the hummers love them. BUT, like RLL's comment, the paint flakes off of the inside of the dish (on a feeder we had for 1 yr). Not sure if it is safe for the birds.

Poison By jacil
The galvanized aluminum gives off an offensive smell that repels the hummers.
There should be a plastic alternative to replace the terrible metal base.

Q.I live in Texas, will the galvanized steel get too hot for the birds to sit on while they are drinking from the feeder?

When hanging a hummingbird feeder, we recommend doing so in a shady location with little wind.

Q.Is the bottom part that holds the nectar made out of metal or just the top portion with the feeding ports?  What type of metal is it?  Galvanized?

The entire base is made of galvanized steel.

Q.Perky-Pet® Mason Jar Glass Hummingbird Feeder and Waterer Set Model #: bmason1 what is cost for a new base without glass would cost. also the glass I have is appx 2"" which screws into base. its not from your company. Can you tell me appx diameter.

Replacement bases are not available for these feeders. The diameter of the glass bottle used in the feeders is approximately 2.5".

Hummingbird Feeders - Expert Tips

Filling Your Feeder:

Here are a few things to review before filling the feeder:

  1. Check to make sure the base compartments are securely tightened
  2. Push container into base to close ports to prevent leakage
  3. Unscrew to cap to fill with nectar
  4. Screw cap back on securely to form an airtight seal.
  5. We recommend keeping the feeder in the closed position until you get to the spot where you want to hang it.
  6. To open nectar reservoir - hold base with one hand and pull up on the container with the other to open ports for feeding. Your feeder is now ready.

Please note: if the cap does not fit securely on to the feeder and you see a gap between the cap and the feeder, the seal may be the issue. Please contact our Consumer Care Department at 1.800.800.1819 or to request a new outer ring for you cap.

To replace the outer ring, push firmly on the center of the cap to pop out the middle. Replace with new outer ring.

Hummingbird Feeders - FAQs

Q: What criteria should I use when selecting a hummingbird feeder?

A: Make sure it is one that will be easy to clean and fill, especially since you will need to clean the feeder every few days. If you are worried about bees and wasps or ants invading the feeder, purchase a hummingbird feeder with bee guards, such as the Perky-Pet model #203CP or ant guards, Perky-Pet model #242.

Q: How do I clean my hummingbird feeders?

A: Hummingbird feeders need to be cleaned every 1-2 weeks. Use hot water and a bottle brush, along with mild soap; be sure to rinse thoroughly. The Perky-Pet cleaning mop is specifically designed for the purpose of cleaning hummingbird feeders, and is very convenient to use. This cleaning mop can also be used on seed feeders and oriole feeders for those small, tight spaces that are difficult to reach.

Q: What is the importance of providing water for hummingbirds?

A: Hummingbirds need fresh, clean water just as much as they need nectar. Hummingbirds stay healthy by using water not just for drinking, but also bathing, cleaning their feathers and to remove parasites. Waterers are better options than bird baths because they provide hummingbirds with fresh, clean water that prevents dirt and debris from contaminating it. In hotter climates or seasons, providing water for hummingbirds makes it easy for them to have access to a water source and retain their energy.
