Appearance of the Calliope Hummingbird

The smallest bird found in the United States and Canada, the Calliope Hummingbird, is named after the Greek muse Calliope.

Short bills and tails are a distinct feature in this breed.  Male Calliope hummingbirds have a glossy green color on the back and a white underneath. They have red-streaked throats.

Female and young Calliope hummingbirds have a pinkish swath on their flanks and dark-streaked throats.

Geography of the Calliope Hummingbird

The breeding habitat of the Calliope Hummingbird is found in shrubby, semi-desert, higher altitude areas from British Columbia south to California and Colorado (including B.C., Washington, Idaho, Montana, western Wyoming, and Nevada down to Baja).

Known to winter in southern and western Mexico, the Calliope Hummingbird begins to migrate south earlier than most birds, taking advantage of late-summer wildflowers in the west. Although the Calliope hummingbird has a western habitat, these tiny birds have been spotted as far east as New Haven, CT.

Local Environments of the Calliope Hummingbird

The Calliope Hummingbird lives in mountain meadows and open forested areas but will reside in scrub and bushes, particularly throughout winter.
