Appearance of the Northern Mockingbird
The male and female Northern Mockingbird look alike having white underneath and light gray on the rest of its body (except for black on some of its tail feathers).
With a length of 8-10 inches, the Northern Mockingbird weighs between 1 1/2 to 2 ounces. The male and female both have long tails, though their wings are short.
The Northern Mockingbird is commonly called the “American Nightingale.” It lives up to its nickname, singing during the day and sometimes at night, varying its songs from spring to fall.
In fact, within a ten-minute timeframe, the Northern Mockingbird can sing up to 30 differing bird songs! It is known to have a repertoire of over 39 songs.
Geography of the Northern Mockingbird
The Northern Mockingbird is found in the southernmost parts of Canada, southward throughout the United States and Mexico as well as the Caribbean. It is usually found in the southern U.S., however.
Several were taken to Hawaii, so the Northern Mockingbird can be found on the islands there as well.
Local Environments of the Northern Mockingbird
Preferring open areas, the Northern Mockingbird can be found in parks, suburbs and farmland as well as the outskirts of forested areas.
No matter the area, a Northern Mockingbird will seek out a tree on which it can sit and watch over its territory.
The Northern Mockingbird can be very aggressive in defending its territory, attacking both animals and humans if it feels its area is being invaded.
