SQUIRRELS 101 »Squirrel Behaviors and Characteristics
Squirrels are no doubt smart little creatures... however, I think we, as humans, don't give them enough credit. In order to understand squirrels and how to outsmart them, we first have to learn about them.
Squirrels give birth to their young about once or twice each year. The number of newborns can vary depending on the species. Although they are born toothless, blind, and naked - they become quite the characters later on. Females solely are responsible for watching and caring for the young, however sometimes predators like hawks and snakes can get lucky.
Tree-dwelling squirrels are independent and prefer to be alone. Ground-dwelling species are social butterflies and enjoy being around others. These are the types that hang or dig around our yards and try to take over our bird feeders.
Squirrels can be very deceptive and they have many tricks up their sleeves. Squirrels are not afraid of humans, but are apparently afraid of owls, which is why you see some people placing fake owls near their bird feeders.
This works sometimes, but not all the time. The best solution on deterring squirrels is to hang a squirrel-resistant feeder, use a type of repellent, or to try and catch them safely with special traps.
