Design Flaws By BD Watcher

I've tried several Perky-Pet hummingbird feeders over the years in search of the right design that doesn't leak, easy to clean, has a glass reservoir with a plastic base, and includes perches. I live in bear country and take the feeder in every night and notice leaking problems constantly. I like the Perky-Pet brand because it's made in the USA, however, the various models I've tried (Pinched Waist, Hummer's Favorite, and designer styles with fancy glass and metal bases) all have design flaws. I've been very frustrated in this search and felt the need to share my thoughts on the features I think would make a great hummingbird feeder: 1st) a round glass reservoir is best with the mouth being smaller than current designs so there's not too much liquid pressure to ooze out of the feeding ports yet easy to insert a bottle brush for cleaning; 2nd) the feeding ports, such as those on the Pinched Waist style need to be tipped up more so when the sun is on the feeder the liquid doesn't drip out, and it's not always feasible to hang the feeder in a location where it won't get some sun throughout the day; 3rd) the base on the Hummer's Favorite design leaks as the liquid gets warm during the day and I haven't been successful in tightening the base to get a vacuum seal, and that may be a factor of living at 6000' elevation and having less air pressure; 4th) from observations I believe perches are essential (if you only hang one feeder outside) even though this isn't the case in nature for hummingbirds feeding on flowers, I've witnessed hummingbirds just arriving from a long flight during migration and appearing to be exhausted as they perched on the feeder drinking up quickly, the perch provides an energy saver in these situations; 5th) the metal bases, although pretty to look at, affect the liquid temperature by keeping it cooler longer and hotter longer throughout the day, the plastic bases seem to be the best material for cleaning and maintaining; 6th) bee guards are helpful as well as the ant moat on the top and please keep those features in place. I'm currently using an old style 'Hummer's Favorite' that has a very narrow reservoir opening and while it doesn't leak, it's not easy to clean. I hope Perky-Pet will take in consideration these design recommendations.

Disappointed By Gordo

This feeder leaks and our hummers don't seem to like it as well, this has been my ONLY disappointment from perky pet. Still enjoy my hummers...

We apologize for this experience. To prevent leakage, the bottle and the base should be assembled tightly to form a vacuum seal. We recommend hanging the feeder level and out of the direct sunlight.

Leaks out the bottom By Doris

I have a regular sunflower feeder and I started to notice humming birds hanging around so I decided to buy a hummingbird feeder. This is my first hummingbird feeder and I wanted a good one so I went with this brand (made in USA!). I also bought the same brand nectar to fill it with. As soon as I attached the feeder to the pole I noticed it leaking out the bottom. Several drops at a time until it was empty. VERY disappointed, I was anxious to see the humming birds! I am now debating which brand I will get next. I will look for a type that has no opening at the bottom.

large capacity and more feeding ports! Great product! By don't have one that's printable

I love the fact that the large capacity means less frequent refilling, and with six flower ports the birds are less territorial and will often eat together.

Love my feeders By Jo

My hummers love it, but so do the bees. They hang around the base where it screws together on the bottom so some how they get the sugar water. It is a great size for my many hummers that live in our yard. For some reason the water gets sour if I don't refill for a week, so when the birds are not as active - which isn't very often - I only fill half way to keep the sugar water fresher. I love all the Perky Pet feeders, and I have a bunch. My biggest challenge is keeping them all full and fresh. My Hummers are my pure delight all day. Thanks for making feeders they love.

Not Happy By Big Dave
First, the slim piece of plastic on the cap used for hanging broke, and dropped it. Now it leaks all the nectar out if the wind blows it or rocks it. It siphons out everything and can't be stopped. This causes bees to swarm all over it. Not a very good design, especially compared to previous models which were fantastic.

Great feeder By Coach Chrissy
We have an older version of this 30 oz feeder and the hummers like it so I decided to purchase a couple of the new ones. You definitely don't need to use a funnel to fill the new model. We have another brand that has a very wide opening that is easier to clean but the hummers like all of our Perky-Pet brand feeders better. Yes, really, they do but cannot figure out why (maybe less quantity of feeder portals for less crowding or also the taller height of the portals to their perch so they can see their enemies (other hummers) better instead of having to lean down -- I don't know).

I must say, however, our hummers truly love, love, love the Perky-Pet® Pinch-Waist Glass 8 oz Hummingbird Feeder model #: 203CPBN. Those are the ones we start with in the spring when a small capacity feeder is best. We still keep them out throughout the summer but have to fill them every 6 hours. I wish Perky-Pet would make a larger capacity of this product. I think the hummers like the minimal perches/portals (4) best and they wait in line for them. Go figure!

We go through a lot of juice during the summer and I have 6 feeders out. It is now mid-August and I have used well over 60# of sugar so we need the high capacity feeders so we don't have to fill them up every 6 hours. We don't use the packets that come with the new feeder; I threw mine out. My recipe is the standard sugar mix recipe: 4 parts water to 1 part sugar.

Will I purchase these again, yes -- but probably the glass bottle ones instead.

It is huge but I needed this size because my humms drink a lot right now in season. They immediately notice this and like it.

Q&A
Q.Have a glass feeder looks just like this---is the silicone gasket that goes in the mouth of the reservoir replaceable?
A.

We apologize as replacement parts are not available for our feeders. However, all feeders are covered by a 30 day return policy and a one year warranty with a copy of the purchase receipt. Please feel free to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-PERKYPET (1-855-737-5973) for further assistance.

Q.How do you fill the feeder with water to prevent the ants to get in?
A.

This feeder features a built in ant moat at the top of the feeder. Simply fill the moat to keep the ants away!

Q.How does air get into the base once it is screwed shut? It appears to be a closed system and a vacuum is formed. I have had to squeeze the plastic cylinder several times to let air in. It seems to me that this apparent vacuum would make it difficult for the hummingbirds to get nectar.
A.

If nectar is not flowing into the base, we recommend loosening the base slightly.
