The most famous oriole is the black and orange Baltimore Oriole, which also shares a name with the baseball team in Maryland. Other orioles are just as visually striking—mostly thanks to their bright orange or yellow feathers. Visit our Learning Center to learn about the varieties of oriole. They may be visiting your oriole feeder soon, so you will need to know all about them!
Oriole Nectar FAQs
Q: Are there orioles in my area?
A: Orioles inhabit most of the United States and some parts of southern Canada during the summer months. Of course not every region will see the same kind of oriole. The Baltimore Oriole, for example, lives east of the Rockies all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. Bullock’s Oriole can be seen in the Rockies and westward.
Q: What do orioles eat?
A: Orioles of all kinds have similar diets—bugs, fruit, berries and nectar. Many orioles also will happily eat jelly, too. The Audubon Oriole is the exception—this bird, mostly residing in Mexico—can be seen eating sunflower seeds at birdfeeders.
Q: How often should I clean an oriole feeder?
A: Oriole feeders should be cleaned every week, and more often in hot weather. Use hot water and a bottle brush, but don’t use any soap or detergent. The Perky-Pet® Cleaning Mop is specially designed for this purpose and very convenient to use. This cleaning mop can also be used for any hummingbird feeders you have.
