Placement to deter squirrels: The key to keeping a bird feeder successfully squirrel-proofed is
the placement. Place your bird feeder 4 feet from the ground and 8 feet from anything a squirrel can jump from.
When hanging from a pole by a hook, it is recommended that the hook have at least a 16” distance from the pole.
Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proof success.
Cleaning: Dirty bird feeders spread disease. We recommend cleaning your feeders weekly, or
monthly at a minimum. Do not put your feeder in the dishwasher as the high temperatures can permanently damage the
feeder parts. Clean your feeders outdoors with a large bucket, and always wear gloves when cleaning. Soak your
feeder in a 9:1 solution of water and bleach for 15 minutes. Then use a bird feeder brush to scrub the feeder with
dish soap and water. Refill when completely dry.
We use 3 of these and learned a few facfs. Squirrels and raccoons can open the cage by spinning it until it drops free from the ring closure. That can be solved by cow hitching a loop of cord to the ring, then hanging the loop. But when a closure broke by splitting the nut in two, we learned that the company does not answer emails created on its own Web sits. Worse, the 855 number on their sit is not answered. So don’t expect warranty service from this growing company.

Looks good on paper. Can't figure out how to open the darn thind
This is such a great feeder. My squirrels are very smart, but this feeder keeps them away and the birds love it. I love the suet because it also does not leave any mess, further dissuading the squirrels! Awesome!!
No squirrels or birds have gotten to the suet.
Either the birds at my house are too big to enter or too scared to enter
The suet is untouched after 2 weeks, big cost savings.
I hope some brave small birds stop by soon and get some suet.
The small diameter stud and cast nut are a very poor mounting combination. Once a squirrel finds a way to jump onto the cage it’s stripped and on the ground. Needs redesigned with larger stud or another mount mechanism that can handle the stress.
So far the birds have not been willing or are unable to make it through the mesh to get to the suet. Chickadees and tufted titmice go round and round the outside, looking for a way in, but then ultimately fly off to "easier" feeders. I thought this would be great since the squirrels take care of the suet in my other regular suet feeders in a matter of hours, but with this one, if even the birds can't get in, what's the point? I may have to cut every other crossbar off the mesh or something, otherwise this thing is going in the trash because I doubt they'd let me return it to the store after being un"used". Too bad too, because it wasn't cheap.
I purchased this less then a year ago. The squirrels do not mess with it at all. I don't see a lot of birds in it, mostly just the woodpeckers. Therefore, I don't go through a lot of suet. With that being said, I don't have to open it up and replace the suet very often. You have to open the top by unscrewing the ring that you hang the feeder with. My ring has already broken off!! Very disappointing. I was going to order a replacement which is only $1.99. Great deal! However, it is over $13.00 to ship it. It should not cost that much to ship one little item. Really???
My Dad invested in this type of feeder and we thought we had the squirrels beat....but two of them outsmarted us!! We would watch from the bay window in the living room as one of the squirrels leaped onto the roof of the Squirrel X feeder. He /She kept spinning the feeder in circles until eventually, the screw on top came undone, and the feeder would fall off of the shepherd's hook, and the squirrels would make off with the entire suet block!!:)) After several tries at trying to remedy this scenario, Dad took the shepherd's hook to an Amish neighbor who fashioned it to look like a ram's horn (spiraled). The squirrels can no longer twist the screw on top off! Now if we could just stop the chipmunks from eating the bird see out of the barn styled feeder with plastic windows.... They popped out the windows, jumped into the feeder, filled their jowls and eventually emptied the feeder!!
I received this as a gift and I was hopeful--even though the openings look too small for even a chickadee. And, as a matter of fact, after 1 month not a single bird has been at the feeder. The squirrels aren't interested in it either. I am very disappointed.
