Feed birds (not squirrels!) and discourage bully birds with the revolutionary Squirrel-X MX5 Squirrel-Resistant Bird Feeder! If a squirrel tries to feed on any of the 4 spring-loaded perches, the MX5โ€™s integrated design shuts every port simultaneously, stopping racketeering rodents right in their tracks. The weather guard hinders squirrels from reaching the seed ports from the roof and blocks out larger bully birds. The durable, round design of the 4 comfort perches attracts a wide variety of bird species. The MX5 disassembles into 3 simple sections for thorough cleaning. Its generous 3.4 lb seed capacity lasts longer between fillings. The push-and-twist metal locking lid quickly removes for effortless refilling. With a durable UV-stabilized polycarbonate tube, elegant dome design and oil-rubbed bronze finish, the MX5 combines strength & style to bring you the ultimate in squirrel-resistant bird feeding and your best defense against squirrels!

Placement to deter squirrels: The key to keeping a bird feeder successfully squirrel-proofed is the placement. Place your bird feeder 4 feet from the ground and 8 feet from anything a squirrel can jump from. When hanging from a pole by a hook, it is recommended that the hook have at least a 16โ€ distance from the pole. Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proof success.

Cleaning: Dirty bird feeders spread disease. We recommend cleaning your feeders weekly, or monthly at a minimum. Do not put your feeder in the dishwasher as the high temperatures can permanently damage the feeder parts. Clean your feeders outdoors with a large bucket, and always wear gloves when cleaning. Soak your feeder in a 9:1 solution of water and bleach for 15 minutes. Then use a bird feeder brush to scrub the feeder with dish soap and water. Refill when completely dry.

Helpfulness
I have an old model ...

I have an old model of one of these bought when the company was owned only by Droll Yankees. I have had it some time and actually bought a second one because it actually works so well. The only problem I have ever had is the perches do unscrew and I have lost a few over the years. Otherwise this model worked as advertised. The squirrels never bother it because they slide off because of the shape and even if they manage to hang on the unit closes and they get no seed. They don't even bother trying any more. If you have changed the model in the last couple of years in any way think about changing it back . You might not get as many 3 star and lower reviews.

Do NOT buy

I spent money for what I thought was a dependable bird feeder that the squirrels would not be able to get bird feed from. Two times I filled it with peanuts, only to have it emptied within days. This last time I went out through the snow to retreave it, only to discover the entire bottom was disconnected, on the ground covered with snow. Very disappointed!!! I would like my money back!

Birds don't like it

Bought this to keep squirrels out. That part works but Birds just don't go to it. I love the looks but, in over a week we have not had more than a few birds, eat from it. The food level has changed only slightly so I know they are not eating from it. Other feeders in the area, with squirrel deterrents also, will use about a quart apiece per day of bird seed but not this one. Birds will fly towards it and then turn away. It doesn't matter what size bird from wrens and finches to sparrows or cardinal size. I think the problem is the shielding just over the feeding ports that is the issue. They either don't see the place to land, due to the overhang of the shield, to get the food or they are not "comfortable" or safe perching there. We have other feeders that are attracting numerous birds of various size, but they avoid this one. Tried it by itself or with other feeders in proximity, but still not seeing any birds going to it after being up over a week.

Make sure the bottom screw is tightened

I loved this bird feeder as it holds a lot of seed so I don't need to refill daily and it keeps the seeds dry. This is my first year using this feeder. Only maintenance I did was to empty out any seed remnants by turning the feeder upside down. HOWEVER - Apparently the bottom screw loosed up, which enabled the mechanism for the feeding chutes to close. Only problem was a sparrow was eating from the feeder when this happened. His head and neck were caught between the outside and inside walls of the bottom of the feeder. I had to take the feeder apart to free him; it was too late because he crossed over the rainbow bridge. I filled the feeder just that morning and the bottom screw was not loose. I know this was an accident, but I am not sure that I will use this feeder again. I don't want another bird to die.

Terrible Perches

We've not had this very long, and the perches fall out constantly. I just called the company to ask if they sell replacement parts and the person who answered didn't know what the product was, couldn't find it on their website, and in the end offered to do a google search for the parts for me?! Missed the assignment entirely. While the feeder is ok, be aware that you're going to be searching for perches and the customer service of this company is non-existent :-(

Disappointed

My husband & I were excited to try this feeder, felt the extra expense would be worth it to keep squirrels out of the feeder. We have alot of squirrels! We were so disappointed to watch this feeder for the past 2 weeks, the birds will not eat from it. I wonder if the perch is too sensitive and the birds are also getting locked out? We have cardinals and other smaller birds. The feeder does look nice and no squirrels have been able to eat from it which is great. Maybe a redesign in the future? I feel that due to the price being higher than most other feeders we should be able to get a refund even if used.

not what I hoped for

birds cannot seem to get close enough to eat- the upper collar is too low, and only the smaller birds can get their heads in to reach the feed in the very narrow ports- I would like to return/ exchange this- I cannot use it.
