Food Preferences of the Anna's Hummingbird
The Anna's Hummingbird requires a constant energy source (nectar) and protein source (insects).
It's very high metabolism is due to the incredible speed with which it flaps its wings, continuously burning the food it has consumed for fuel.
After feeding from the nectar of flowers, the hummingbird carries the pollen to other flowers.
Anna’s are known for consuming more insects than the typical hummingbird. The Anna’s favorite plants include Eucalyptus, Red-Hot Poker, tree tobacco and red gooseberry. In a pinch, the Anna’s will resort to eating tree sap.
Sadly enough, occasionally bees and wasps may become impaled on the bill of an Anna's Hummingbird, causing the bird to starve to death.
