The Red-Winged Blackbird is a medium sized songbird reaching 7-9 inches in length and weighing between an ounce and 2 ¾ ounces.
The male Red-Winged Blackbird has vivid shiny black feathers with red and yellow patches on its shoulders. The male is capable of hiding its red shoulder if it wants.
The female Red-Winged Blackbird appears completely differently, with brown and white stripes throughout its pale brown body. Although it doesn't sound as spectacular as the male's coloring, it is excellent for camouflaging the female Red-Winged Blackbird as she sits on her nest of eggs.
