Nesting Habits of the Song Sparrow

The cup-shaped nest of the Song Sparrow is composed of leaves, grass and similar materials and is lined with soft grass and hair. The nest, built by the female Song Sparrow, is often built in old fields and brush areas.

The female Song Sparrow lays 3-5 blue green speckled eggs and sits on the eggs for approximately two weeks.   After the eggs hatch, both the male and the female Song Sparrow feed and care for the young. The baby Song Sparrow chicks learn to fly in about two and a half weeks and will leave the nest shortly thereafter.
