Looking for a fun and entertaining way to feed birds, not squirrels? The Droll Yankees® Yankee Flipper® Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder combines superior durability and a weight-activated, motorized perch to provide humane squirrel defense. The UV-resistant seed reservoir and powder-coated, heavy-duty metal components offer superior durability and resistance to the elements and squirrel damage, so you can be sure this feeder will last through many seasons.
The squirrel-proof design is centered around a spinning perch. When a squirrel tries to gain access to the feeder, the weight-sensitive perch activates the motor. The spinning action then gently tosses the squirrel off before it can devour your seed supply. In addition, the tight-fitting metal cap prevents squirrels from lifting the lid, while the long seed reservoir prevents them from reaching the ports from above.
A 100% squirrel-proof feeder starts with hanging it correctly! Hang the feeder at least 4’ off the ground and 8’ away from anything a squirrel can jump from, so squirrels can’t reach the ports without activating the spinning perch.
Feed Birds Not Squirrels
The Yankee Flipper® is calibrated to support the weight of even large birds like cardinals and woodpeckers but is immediately activated by squirrels. With less competition from squirrels, birds won’t be able to resist stopping by for a visit! The feeder features four feeding ports and a circular perch so multiple birds can dine at the same time, and you can enjoy a better view.
Less Seed Waste
The feeder’s squirrel-proof design ensures less seed waste, which means money saved and fewer messes on the ground. Plus, the large 5 lb seed capacity ensures you won’t have to worry about birds emptying your feeder too quickly during peak feeding times. Convenient internal baffles also help to keep seed flowing freely to the ports as birds feed.
Easy to Fill & Clean
Cleaning and filling is an effortless process thanks to the feeder’s convenient design. This feeder features a lift-off lid and wide-mouth seed reservoir so you can easily get to every nook and cranny. We recommend cleaning the feeder at least every two weeks and regularly checking the seed to ensure it is free of insects and mold.

The idea behind this is excellent, however it didn’t take long for the squirrels to figure out how to stop the wheel from spinning, and draining the battery. On the base with the four spring prongs, the squirrels have figured out how to hold on to all four prongs and eat away. Even using a cone ballast, they find a way.
Multiple squirrels have quickly figured out how to span the distance from the shepherd’s hook to the spinner & preventing the spinner from working. Within a couple of days they have eaten about 1/3 of 5 lbs of sunflower seeds + exhausting the charge on the spinner. Clearly not worth the $$$$.
We are sorry to hear about your experience with this feeder! The key to successfully keeping a feeder squirrel-proof is its placement. Squirrels are agile and are able to jump up to 8ft horizontally and 4ft vertically. For this reason, we recommend that feeders be placed 8ft away from any structures that they can climb on so that they do not reach across to access the feeding holes. It can be helpful to trim back and prune any nearby bushes or branches within 12ft of a feeder. We also recommend that feeders be placed higher than 4ft off the ground, preventing the squirrels from jumping and grabbing onto the bottom. If you are using a hook or pole, we recommend that the hook have at least a 16in distance from the pole.

THE BEST squirrel-proof bird feeder ...

THE BEST squirrel-proof bird feeder ever! I cannot believe how wonderful this feeder is....it is genius. Not only is the feeder strong and sturdy, the squirrel CANNOT break into it no matter how hard they try. When the squirrels try to steal seed, they fly off and quickly learn to leave the feeder alone. There is not a better feeder anywhere! The price may seem a bit high, but it is worth every penny in saved seed. I have had mine for years and it is still going strong. It is easy to keep clean and easy to fill. The entertainment factor when an unsuspecting squirrel approaches is also worth every penny.
owned three of these over the years. They are not 100% squirrel proof because I had them be able to lift the lid and actually found one inside after it. It kind of ate it its way through to the middle and the price is unaffordable now for me.
Been lotsa fun watching the squirrels go through 3 phases:
1. Getting thrown.
2. Learning to hold down bar until battery wears out (think they actually learned from the raccoons)!
3. Small Black Bear ending their fun.
This has worked great for about 5-6 years. Squirrels have scratched it up, trying to pry the lid off, to no avail. Within the last few days/weeks?, the squirrels have eaten through the plastic to create a hole about 2 in. x 4 in. big; the picture below is from 2 days ago. The daylight one is from today, but is from as close as I could get before he ran off. I know they can climb onto it from the roof of the gazebo. They use their paws to collect seed as long as it is high enough--but they are enlarging it daily. It's not that it's thin plastic; this is pretty hefty stuff. Needs a replacement cylinder!
Bought the Yankee flipper feeder that is motorized to spin the perch if something heavier than a bird touches it. Presumably it will spin if squirrels get on it and toss them off. Our squirrels have figured out that if they can get on it and ride it for a few spins, the wobbling causes seeds to spew out of the feeder and land in the ground. It still gets 5 stars for the fun we get out of watching the squirrels as they evolve.
Definitely squirrel proof. Built very well. In the spring the feed lasted nine days where I live! In the fall about 3 days. I use Black Oil Sunflower seeds mixed with a little Sunflower hearts. It will be the last bird feeder I will ever need. Forever! It's is that good! And finally, it's entertaining to watch the squirrels ride!
I've had my Yankee Flipper for 10-15 years and it's still performing as well as it did the first day I hung it in my yard. It is excellent at deterring squirrels (although some of them never give up!), and a great feeder for birds. The only thing that has changed with the feeder over the years is that it's a little worse for the wear (I live in the NE; with NE winters). But Droll Yankee's customer support and the service they provide have assisted me each time I've had an issue with my feeder - from walking me through a tough time of dismantling the feeder/putting it back together, or with providing a new part, once they determine that that is what's causing my issue. They are truly the best!!

Is it adjustable for weight? The red squirrel does not spin off.
Question by: Carol Chester on May 2, 2023, 12:58 PM
The sensitivity for this feeder cannot be adjusted. While red squirrels will not be heavy enough to activate the feeder, hanging it away from launching points will help to keep squirrels from stealing a snack.
