Keep squirrels away from your bird feeder and save seed with the Yankee Whipper® Squirrel-Proof
Bird Feeder. It
allows the birds to eat and saves seed by keeping squirrels away.
Hungry birds will adapt as best they can to the conditions in order to survive and larger birds will
sometimes hang onto the collapsed perch and continue to feed. It is uncomfortable for them and difficult so it
discourages them but might not be the ultimate preventative.
Placement to deter squirrels: The key to keeping a bird feeder successfully squirrel-proofed is
the placement. Place your bird feeder 4 feet from the ground and 8 feet from anything a squirrel can jump from.
When hanging from a pole by a hook, it is recommended that the hook have at least a 16” distance from the pole.
Placing a baffle on the pole or having a caged feeder will also help to ensure squirrel-proof success.
Cleaning: Dirty bird feeders spread disease. We recommend cleaning your feeders weekly, or
monthly at a minimum. Do not put your feeder in the dishwasher as the high temperatures can permanently damage the
feeder parts. Clean your feeders outdoors with a large bucket, and always wear gloves when cleaning. Soak your
feeder in a 9:1 solution of water and bleach for 15 minutes. Then use a bird feeder brush to scrub the feeder with
dish soap and water. Refill when completely dry.
WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including Bisphenol A (BPA), which is known to the State
of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to http://www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
My husband and daughter gifted me with the Droll Yankee Flipper & the Dipper about 15 years ago for Mothers Day. My husband passed in 2019 and my daughter is now grown. I still have both feeders & I love them. However the perches on the dipper started breaking off. I found the updated version ofthe dipper, but still have the old version, missing perches. Hoping some day to find another and replace the bottom half. I love these feeders. The birds love these feeders. I highly recommend them.
The feeder is okay, but service seems designed to suck

The feeder is okay, but the springs break. Lots of people about that, so it's a known problem. The company said over a year ago they were going to do something about it.
No problem, it's under warranty. Fill out the "contact us" page on the website, which gets you an email which says "We no longer provide customer support or service via email" and points you to their phone number (800-352-9164). Call the phone number, and it says for warranty service, fill out the form at perkypet.com/warrantyclaim. There's no form, it just redirects you to the "contact us" page.
The clean bird food pours out when the birds eat just a little. I would not recommend this for anyone who wants to use shelled/clean bird food.
It works better for sunflower seeds but you end up with a mess growing under it in the garden.
Thank you for sharing this feedback. We're sorry to hear that this is happening when using the feeder. It can be used with a wide variety of seed types. These concerns have been shared with our Product Managers.

I'm on the 3rd one ...

I'm on the 3rd one of these that I've owned over the last 12 years or so and I need another replacement. The biggest complaint I have is the plastic tube will crack where the screws hold it to the bottom metal base. It's not a great design. I added some small fiber washers to the screws to spread out the pressure a little from the screw heads on the plastic tube; don't know if that really helped much. But it does keep the squirrels and most larger birds (crows and similar sized birds) from getting the seed. I've had some large birds (Blue Jays and Red Belly Woodpeckers) hold on to one perch once it flips down and reach up to the hole next to the perch they're on to get seed. The feeder hangs on a pole with a baffle on it so the squirrels have given up.
I recommend it only because I've not found another feeder that I'm willing to try yet. But it's kind of expensive.
I’ve had my feeder for about 6 months. The squirrels have learned to hang onto the spinner to get it to throw seed out. It lasts about 10 days before I have to refill. At least the squirrels have to work for it. Plenty of birds get to eat from it and they love it. This feeder is fantastic entertainment from my back porch. I would definitely buy again.
Best squirrel proof feeder I'e ever owned, but th springs that support the perches are terrible. If they ontinue producing this product, there must be springs available somewhere. Original price for the feeder does not put it in the throw away category when the 10 cent spring breaks.
We appreciate your feedback and are working to have replacement springs available. Please contact us at 800-352-9164 for assistance, we're happy to help!

This is the longest lasting ...

This is the longest lasting bird feeder I've ever had, but now the springs inside are letting go, I lost two so far. I'm wondering if I can get replacement springs for it. I really don't want to spend the money on a new one as they aren't cheap.
Nope.
The feeder has been up for 1 week. It was fine until I looked this morning, and *poof*, the seed (the tube was filled 1/2 way) was gone. An expensive waste of both the seed and my money.
We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and are sorry to hear some critter stole your birdseed! Even for feeders with squirrel-repelling features, it's important to hang them at least 4 ft off the ground and 8 ft away from launch points. Please contact us at 800-352-9164 with any questions!

It's been tough for years for me.

I find the negative reviews interesting. I bought this feeder at least 15 years ago and it has held up very well until about eight months ago when one of the springs finally gave out. I did replace the plastic tube once 3 years ago due to significant Florida sun yellowing. I use a ten foot feeder pole with four hooks and a baffle. Now that the spring has been broken a squirrel has figured out how to hang on the bottom after he jumps out of a tree onto the pole above the baffle protection. I'd buy another if I needed one but the volume of seed it hold is so large one squirrel really isn't that big of adeal.
I would not call this feeder squirrel proof by any stretch, in less than 2 months the springs that hold the perches up broke and replacement springs are not available from Droll Yankee. I called and was told that they don't carry parts. At this point I don't even want a new feeder I just want my money back.
Thank you for sharing this feedback. We're sorry to hear that this happened to your feeder. It is covered under a two year manufacturer's warranty and a lifetime warranty for squirrel damage. Please reach out to us directly for assistance. Any refunds would need to be completed through the retailer.

Question by: Stella Martin on Feb 26, 2025, 3:45 PM
Hi, thank you so much for your question! This feeder does not have any battery inside and does not require a replacement battery. It just has springs at the bottom.

Can I change curves perch to the straight perch? Birds just won't use the feeder with curved perches.

Alternate perches are not available for this feeder.
